What do you need for a Vedic birth chart?

Check the details before interpreting the chart. Your date, time and place of birth establish its starting point.

  1. Gregorian birth date

Prepare the year, month and day. If your record uses a lunar calendar, confirm the corresponding Gregorian date before entering it.

  2. Local birth time

Use the hour and minute from a birth certificate or another reliable record where possible. The ascendant and houses are sensitive to time, so keep any uncertainty explicit.

  3. Birth city

Use the place where you were born, rather than your current home. The location and time zone at birth matter, including any daylight saving adjustment.

Where should you begin reading a chart?

Start with the chart as a whole, then consider timing and the question you want to explore. A single sign or placement needs context.

LAGNA

The ascendant: a starting point

The ascendant corresponds to the rising point on the eastern horizon at birth. It helps establish the house structure and depends on your birth time and location.

MOON · NAKSHATRA

The Moon and its lunar mansion

Indian astrology often gives particular attention to the Moon’s sign and Nakshatra, or lunar mansion. These are read alongside the other planets and houses.

BHAVA

Houses: the context of a placement

Houses organize different areas of life. Read a planet’s house placement together with its relationships to other parts of the chart.

DASHA

Planetary periods: the timing layer

Dasha systems organize periods and subperiods used to discuss changing themes over time. They are interpreted with the birth chart and do not establish guaranteed dates for events.

Vedic astrology questions

Are Vedic astrology, Indian astrology and Jyotish the same thing?
In everyday usage, these names refer to the Indian astrological tradition. “Vedic astrology” emphasizes its cultural background, while Jyotish is a common transliteration of its Sanskrit name. Methods and chart settings can still differ between schools.
How does Vedic astrology differ from Western astrology?
A common difference is the zodiac reference: Indian astrology usually uses a sidereal zodiac, while modern Western astrology commonly uses a tropical zodiac. The same birth details can therefore produce different sign placements. Interpretive priorities and timing methods also differ, so check the system before comparing charts.
Can I explore a Vedic chart without an exact birth time?
You can start by learning the terminology and looking for reliable birth records. Avoid choosing an arbitrary time and treating the resulting ascendant, houses or divisional charts as settled. If you only know a time range, keep that uncertainty part of the interpretation.
What are the D1 and D9 charts?
D1 is the basic birth chart. D9, or Navamsha, is one of the divisional charts used in Indian astrology. Divisional charts add particular perspectives and are usually read with the birth chart and timing periods. A single divisional chart or placement should not be used to infer an entire life story.
